University of Auckland Commission of Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon

There are always mixed feelings with any new commission, particularly when the subject is a high-profile leader. At once, there is the huge honour of being asked to undertake the commission, while also trepidation around meeting any new client’s specific vision and maintaining my own artistic integrity and process. But painting former Auckland University Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon in 2021 was a particular highlight.

To facilitate the initial stages of the portrait, I had the unique opportunity to stay at the University of Auckland for two weeks in 2021, residing in the historic former Government House. This period allowed me to spend valuable time drawing Stuart, capturing his likeness and presence in preparation for the painting.

The portrait itself was brought to life in my studio in Broad Bay, Dunedin, where I worked on the large portrait in the medium of egg tempera. I was particularly pleased with the final result, especially the decision to incorporate the view of the university campus as seen from Stuart’s windows into the background of the painting. This element serves as a subtle yet significant connection to his role and the institution he led.

This commission was a deeply rewarding experience, made poignant by the sad news of Stuart’s death in 2023.
